Chapter Six

The main room of the Belle Dame couldn’t have looked more different than it had just a few minutes ago.

It looked like a stampede had run right through the place. Tables and chairs lay tossed on their sides on the floor, glass from broken bottles strewn all over the place. I was a little amazed at how quickly the place had cleared out at the first sign of Griffin’s gang. They must have had a lot of practice.

The guy standing in the middle of the room with his pistol to a woman’s head, though, that was probably new.

“Hello, noob,” Shatterhand spat, cocking the hammer of his gun. “I believe you have something that belongs to me.”

I froze up, and Trixie stiffened next to me. That wasn’t just any woman Shatterhand was holding hostage - although any girl would be bad enough. It was Vara. My heart dropped into my stomach at the sight of her - she’d been disarmed, her eyes wild with anger at being humiliated this way.

“Let the girl go,” I said, putting my hands as close to my holster as I dared. “Then we can settle this like men.”

Shatterhand snorted. “You fucking kidding me? The second I let her go, your little blonde bitch pops her special rifle out of nowhere and puts one in my forehead. Look, I can already see her trying to summon it.”

He was right - Trixie’s face was screwed up in concentration, holding her rifle right at the point where it was just about to burst into reality in her hands. It was one hell of a weird Mexican standoff, but a standoff it was.

“Don’t do anything,” Vara snarled. “Let him kill me. This is only a game-”

With a maniacal giggle, Shatterhand slammed the butt of his pistol into Vara’s head.

Instantly, the world around me went red. Vara staggered, nearly sliding out of Shatterhand’s grip. Blood flowed down her face from a huge cut across her forehead.

Deep down, I knew it wasn’t “real” - but it’s hard to stay logical when you’re watching a woman you have a killer crush on get beaten by a little worm like Shatterhand. I wanted to hurt him, to remind him what a shitty little bully he was - and since I couldn’t do that with my guns, I decided to do it with words.

“Did you hear me up there?” I asked mockingly. I could see from the look on Shatterhand’s face that the question confused him. “I’m not sure when you got in - but from the way Trixie was screaming, I was convinced everyone in Elysium Springs could hear us...”

Shatterhand’s face went pale. His eyes widened, doing a double-take as the meaning of my words hit home.

“You fucked him!?” Spittle flew from his lips as he turned his gaze on Trixie. He flushed bright red with anger, his grip on Vara tightening hard enough to bruise. “You fucked the fucking noob?”

Suddenly Trixie understood. We needed to humiliate Shatterhand - throw him completely off-balance. Then we could win.
